My Mission Statement

Right now I’m reading the book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey. If you’ve never read it, I highly recommend reading it. The insight I’ve received so far in the book is life changing. I’m only a third of the way through, but I definitely love this book. Now, I’m learning to start everything with the end in mind. Stephen R. Covey says in order to do that we should come up with a personal mission statement. So here’s mine:

I will live my life in such a way that I never will disappoint my Heavenly Father. My greatest works will be raising my children in love and righteousness. I will be proactive rather than reactive. I will act for myself rather than be acted upon. I will stay happy and positive even during the hardest of times. I will use the redeeming and enabling power of the atonement often, so that I may become the best that I can be. I will listen rather than argue. I will think before I act. I will stay physically active throughout my life. My family will work hard then play hard. I will always appreciate the little things in life and recognize my blessings. I will never let my circumstances determine my happiness. I will finish what I start.

I’m going to use this mission statement for the rest of my life. My ultimate goal is exaltation, so everything I do in my life will be stepping stones to getting me closer to achieving that. When any challenge comes my way I can look at this and remember to keep the end in mind.

Thoughts on the Atonement

This week in my New Testament class we’re studying the atonement. Words cannot describe how grateful I am for the blessings of the atonement. Without the atonement there would be no way we could make it back to heaven. No eternal families. No life after death. In Alma 7:11-13, it goes over everything that the atonement encompasses. Not only does the atonement allow us to repent, but we can use it for comfort and know that everything we experience Christ experienced as well. And since he experienced it, he knows exactly how to help us.

My absolute favorite quote goes perfectly with this topic. It’s all about the atonement and some of the things it covers. It’s really long, but worth the read!

“We know that Jesus experienced the totality of mortal existence in Gethsemane. It’s our faith that he experienced everything—absolutely everything. Sometimes we don’t think through the implications of that belief. We talk in great generalities about the sins of all humankind, about the suffering of the entire human family. But we don’t experience pain in generalities. We experience it individually. That means he knows what it felt like when your mother died of cancer—how it was for your mother, how it still is for you. He knows what it felt like to lose the student body election. He knows that moment when the brakes locked and the car started to skid. He experienced the slave ship sailing from Ghana toward Virginia. He experienced the gas chambers at Dachau. He experienced napalm in Vietnam… He knows about drug addiction and alcoholism…. On a profound level, he understands about the hunger to hold your baby that sustains you through pregnancy. He understands both the physical pain of giving birth and the immense joy. He understands about rape and infertility and abortion… He understands your mother-pain when your five-year-old leaves for kindergarten, when a bully picks on your fifth-grader, when your daughter calls to say that the new baby has Down’s syndrome. He knows your mother’s rage…when someone gives your thirteen-year-old drugs, when someone seduces your seventeen-year-old. He knows the pain you live with when you come home to a quiet apartment where the only children are visitors, when you hear that your former husband and his new wife were sealed in the temple last week, when your fiftieth wedding anniversary rolls around and your husband has been dead for two years. He knows all that. He’s been there. He’s been lower than all that. He’s not waiting for us to be perfect. Perfect people don’t need a Savior. He came to save his people in their imperfections. He is the Lord of the living, and the living make mistakes. He’s not embarrassed by us, angry at us, or shocked. He wants us in our brokenness, in our unhappiness, in our guilt and our grief.” Chieko Okazaki

The atonement is an unlimited gift we are freely given and I’m so grateful for that. I have used the enabling power of the atonement many times and the peace that comes when we use the atonement is undeniable. I cannot begin to imagine the pain Christ went through and I’m eternally indebted to him and all that he has done for me. I know that through the atonement we can repent and become whole again. I know that Jesus is the Christ. He loves each of us and knows what we need individually. Turn to him and he will be there. He always is and always will be there no matter what.

Happy Father's Day Dad :)

My dad is the greatest! I know there will always be at least one guy I can count on and that’s him! He is so close to the spirit and there have been many times that he’s said exactly what I’ve needed to hear. My family always teases him about how he’s always trying to be funny, but to be honest I really do think that my dad is funny :) He has always been such a good example to me and I hope I can marry a guy that’s as great as my dad! Thanks for everything Dad! I love you! :)

For an Extra Boost in Hope

One of my all time favorite movies is Facing the Giants. It’s probably one of the cheesiest movies ever, but the message that it has is what makes it so great. If you’ve never seen the movie, it’s about Coach Grant Taylor and his football team. They haven’t won a game in a long time and Grant is about to lose his job because of it. He realizes that he needs to change the way he coaches his team. He decides to not only teach his team things about football, but to get them to apply those things into their lives. The main thing he teaches them is that with God nothing is impossible. Now this is the principle that I love about the movie. With God NOTHING is impossible. Think about that for a second. It seems crazy, but it’s true! I look back on my life and the times I’ve struggled the most are the times when I’m not reading my scriptures, going to the temple, and praying. It’s the little things that make the difference.

We will no doubt go through trials that are unimaginable to us now, but even through the hardest things, God will be there for us every step of the way. We just need to turn to him and he will help us carry our burdens. I know for some people, they feel like God has abandoned them. They feel like there is no hope. President Eyring puts it perfectly, “I cannot promise an end to your adversity in this life. I cannot assure you that your trials will seem to you to be only for a moment. One of the characteristics of trials in life is that they seem to make clocks slow down and then appear almost to stop. There are reasons for that. Knowing those reasons may not give much comfort, but it can give you a feeling of patience. Those reasons come from this one fact: in Their perfect love for you, Heavenly Father and the Savior want you fitted to be with Them to live in families forever. Only those washed perfectly clean through the Atonement of Jesus Christ can be there.” (“Mountains to Climb”, April 2012 General Conference). The atonement is not just there for us to repent; it is also there for comfort. Christ will “succor his people according to their infirmities”. He is going to RUN to us. Trust in the Lord and his timing. Stay strong in your faith and always remember that with God nothing is impossible. It will all be worth it in the end.
