Happy Father's Day Dad :)

My dad is the greatest! I know there will always be at least one guy I can count on and that’s him! He is so close to the spirit and there have been many times that he’s said exactly what I’ve needed to hear. My family always teases him about how he’s always trying to be funny, but to be honest I really do think that my dad is funny :) He has always been such a good example to me and I hope I can marry a guy that’s as great as my dad! Thanks for everything Dad! I love you! :)

For an Extra Boost in Hope

One of my all time favorite movies is Facing the Giants. It’s probably one of the cheesiest movies ever, but the message that it has is what makes it so great. If you’ve never seen the movie, it’s about Coach Grant Taylor and his football team. They haven’t won a game in a long time and Grant is about to lose his job because of it. He realizes that he needs to change the way he coaches his team. He decides to not only teach his team things about football, but to get them to apply those things into their lives. The main thing he teaches them is that with God nothing is impossible. Now this is the principle that I love about the movie. With God NOTHING is impossible. Think about that for a second. It seems crazy, but it’s true! I look back on my life and the times I’ve struggled the most are the times when I’m not reading my scriptures, going to the temple, and praying. It’s the little things that make the difference.

We will no doubt go through trials that are unimaginable to us now, but even through the hardest things, God will be there for us every step of the way. We just need to turn to him and he will help us carry our burdens. I know for some people, they feel like God has abandoned them. They feel like there is no hope. President Eyring puts it perfectly, “I cannot promise an end to your adversity in this life. I cannot assure you that your trials will seem to you to be only for a moment. One of the characteristics of trials in life is that they seem to make clocks slow down and then appear almost to stop. There are reasons for that. Knowing those reasons may not give much comfort, but it can give you a feeling of patience. Those reasons come from this one fact: in Their perfect love for you, Heavenly Father and the Savior want you fitted to be with Them to live in families forever. Only those washed perfectly clean through the Atonement of Jesus Christ can be there.” (“Mountains to Climb”, April 2012 General Conference). The atonement is not just there for us to repent; it is also there for comfort. Christ will “succor his people according to their infirmities”. He is going to RUN to us. Trust in the Lord and his timing. Stay strong in your faith and always remember that with God nothing is impossible. It will all be worth it in the end.

Happy Birthday Stacie :)

It's my favorite sister's 17th birthday tomorrow! AHHH! I can't believe she's that old. It seems like yesterday we were sharing a room and jumping from each other's beds, having tickle fights, and just being crazy together...which we still do :) I love her so much! Even though she is younger, she is definitely an example to me. She just graduated from MATC and got her CNA, she knows what she wants to do with her life and won't let anyone stop her, and she is one of the happiest people I know! You're great Stac :) I look up to you more than you know! I'm proud of everything you've accomplished in your life and there sure are a lot of things! You freaking ran a half marathon when you were 16, you've lettered in swimming, you're smart, and I can guarantee that you've touched hundreds of people's lives even if they've just known you for a couple minutes :) Happy Birthday Stacie! I love you :)

To My Mom

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQ4Rnba85o8

I easily have the BEST mom in the world, hands down! She always knows exactly what to say to me. She is constantly serving my family and others. She is one of the most loving people I know. She is my role model and I hope to be as great of a person as she is one day. I love you Mom! :) Thanks for everything you've done for me and for everything you've sacrificed for our family. Half Empty or Half Full?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlhVgn7sKv0

I saw this video on Facebook. This guy has a great perspective on life. It's so crazy that our attitude determines everything. It determines how we feel, what we think, what we do...everything. There's a great quote that kind of goes along with this. "Never let your circumstances determine your happiness." You, and you alone decide your own happiness. So choose to have a good attitude. Obviously, it's a lot easier said then done, but it really will make your life go much smoother :)

The Joys of Dating

At the end of Winter semester, I had the opportunity to go on a blind date. I willingly accepted. Little did I know it would turn out to be the most awkward date of my life.

My friend from track invited me to double with her. She said she didn't know the guy, but that he seemed cool and that he liked running. We already have one thing in common, so I thought this would be good. He comes to pick me up at 8:15 and right when I see him I notice that he looks much older than me....like a good 8 years older. He was balding pretty bad and I know that's a sensitive subject for many guys, but it was bad. I decided to get to know him before completely writing him off.

We went to Pizza Pie Cafe for dinner and my date and the guy we were doubling with were mission companions. They told us a story from their mission and I liked listening to the story, but then they went on and on and on about their mission stories for most of dinner. Don't get me wrong, mission stories are great, but not if that's all you talk about. We then headed out to go bowling. I got to know my date a little more and was surprised to find out we had a lot of things in common. Just about everything we talked about we had in common, which never happens for me. We finished bowling at 10:30 and the guys wanted to go back to their apartment and watch Doctor Who.

We get to their apartment and I made the mistake of sitting on the edge of the couch. My date sits right next to me. I cross my legs and fold my arms. In case you don't know, that's the universal sign of "I don't want to hold your hand". He puts his hand basically on my leg with his palm up. I looked down and just laughed. I think to myself, "Heck no am I holding your hand dude. Not only is this our first date, but it's a blind date. Not happening." He scoots closer to me and by this point he's as close as he can get without sitting on my lap. I tried to lean against the edge of the couch, but that didn't help much.

About 30 minutes into the show, he finally folds his arms. I think, "Yes! Finally he gets the point that I'm not holding his hand." I then feel his hand brush against my arm. He is now trying to find my hand while both of our arms are folded! I literally was thinking to myself, "This guy's an idiot. How in the world does he think I want to hold his hand?!" I tried to pull my hand away, but his hand was already on mine, so his hand moved with mine. I was thinking of what I was going to do. Would I pretend I got a phone call and that there was an emergency? Would I get up to go to the bathroom and stay in the bathroom for the rest of the show? Would I just say I didn't feel good and wanted to leave? I thought of every possible excuse. What seemed like years later, he moved his hand and put his hands back on his lap.

I think that this is the end of the most awkward moment of my life, but just minutes later he folds his arms and tries to hold my hand again! This guy is brave. I already denied him once and he's going to try again. Well, buddy, I still haven't changed my mind. It's not happening. The show finally ends. I stand up and put my coat on. I was still nice to him and smiled, but I sure was relieved that the date was over. He drives me home. I hugged him then got into my apartment as quickly as I could.

I learned a couple things from this date. First off, don't ever go on a blind date unless the person that is setting you up actually knows the guy. Second, don't sit on the very edge of the couch. That way if he sits next to me and I don't want anything to happen I can just slide over. Third, next time I don't want to hold a guy's hand I need to make sure he knows that. I thought I was being pretty clear, but maybe I need to make it even more clear.

I'm crossing my fingers that this semester I won't have any awkward dates, but we'll see what happens.
